This unique M1855 socket bayonet came from a home in Sharpsburg, MD – host of the battle of Antietam.
Featuring a lightly rusted outer condition with some bright metal surface observable at the edges and in localized areas. The triangular spike is snapped at the upper portion nearest the tip and the band is missing from the socket. A strong “US” still adorns the ‘blade’ at its base.
The overall length of the bayonet is 14” with the spiked blade measuring just a fraction over 11.25” from the arm to the broken tip.
Perhaps picked up by a local after the cataclysmic fight or the extensive campaigning in the area, it appears to have been stored away from the direct elements for quite some time – similar to “barn find” condition items.
A quintessential model of bayonet with very scarce ties to America’s bloodiest day and the surrounding historic sights makes this a prime piece for any collection of Civil War memorabilia. [cm][ph:L]
