Officially known as the M1851 Jefferson Bootee, the simple but rugged “brogan” was the standard issue shoe for both US and CS forces during the Civil War. They have a medium rise upper with four eyelets for laces, a square toe, and pegged sole. The uppers were made rough side out. They were simple, rugged, and mass-produced.

These show heavy use. The leather is stiff and stretched, and shows wear. They are generally square toed with the tongue being an integral part of the front portion of the brogan. The back has reinforced stitching above the heel at the ankle. The two halves are stitched together and additionally have a single rivet on each side. There are four eyelets but no laces are present.

Leather soles are pegged and tacked. The entire sole on both pieces exhibit heavy wear and loss, being most extreme at the heel and toe areas. These brogans “walked all the way home.” From the Texas Civil War Museum collection.

Civil War brogans in general, and that also show this amount of hard use are very hard to come by.  [jet][ph:L]
