Image is a bust view of a bearded soldier in a light-colored shell jacket posed in slight right profile.
Contrast and clarity are fair to poor. Mount and paper have light to moderate surface dirt. Bottom right of the mount is signed “YOURS TRULY, J. ?. COPELL.”
Reverse is blank but for some collector information at bottom.
From the collection of the late William A. Turner.
A search of the records in the National Archives finds a J. Copell serving as a musician in the 9th Mississippi Infantry. His header card has a note saying “see JAMES H. CAPELL 10TH MISSISSIPPI.” Records for James H. Cappell shows that he served as a private in Company D of the 10th Mississippi from April 1861 to June 12, 1862 when he was transferred to Company F. Then, on February 2, 1863 he was assigned to the regimental brass band where he remained until the surrender of Joe Johnston’s Army of Tennessee in April of 1865.
Nothing is known of his post-war life.
The 9th Mississippi was consolidated into the 10th Mississippi Infantry and saw action at Manassas, Shiloh, Munfordville, Corinth, Atlanta, Jonesboro and Franklin. [ad] [ph:L]
