Admiral George Dewey (1837-1917) was most famous for his 1898 destruction of the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay during the Spanish American War. His image became a patriotic representation of the U.S. as a world power and entered popular culture as an advertising ploy for all sorts of things. This is a nice example of his image being used on a contemporary photograph album to hold cabinet card sized images. The celluloid cover is a full color portrait of Dewey at center flanked by US flags with three ships of his fleet at sea at top and three more in small cartouches at bottom, all labeled. His portrait is captioned at lower center, “Admiral George Dewey, U.S.N. / The Hero of Manila / and his victorious fleet.”

The cover is in excellent condition, the colors are bright, the green velvet back cover is very good. This displays wonderfully. The interior pages are usable, but the album itself is most interesting a colorful bit of popular culture harking back to some of the British uses of Admiral Nelson’s image on all sorts of commercial wares almost a century earlier.   [sr] [ph:L]
