This folding lantern is taller and wider than those usually encountered. It has the original Mica windows, Japanned finish and a painted gold stencil maker’s mark. The item is made to collapses down to a small pocket-sized square.
When opened the lantern meas. approx. 3.50 inches wide x 4.50 deep x 7.25 inches tall. Two sides have windows with a gold stenciled linear decoration. The third side is solid but with the same gold decoration around the edges. There is a worn “MINOR’S PATENT JAN. 24, 1865” stencil done in gold at center.
The back panel is solid with a looped handle at one edge. This back panel swings open to expose the inside of the lantern. Attached to the inside of the back door are two small compartments, one for holding extra candles and the other for matches. There is also an arm with a cylindrical base that is still holding a used candle. The arm can be manipulated from side to side.
The U.S. Patent Office issued Patent #46,011 on January 24,1865 to John A. Minor who was the inventor of this interesting little item.
Overall the item is in good condition. There is some minor wear and scratching on the outside but one side of the roof is missing some of the original finish. [ad] [ph:L]
