The blade of this knife is in excellent condition. Its surface is bright and clean and the edge is near perfect. There are only two rough spots along the length of the edge, these can be felt but are not readily visible. The surface of the blade also has some dull rubbing marks from being drawn from the sheath numerous times but these are slight and acceptable. The blade has a deep clipped point and meas. approx. 9.00 inches long. One side of the ricasso is marked with a crown flanked by “V. R.” over the maker’s mark which reads “JOSEPH RODGERS & SONS / CUTLERS TO HER MAJESTY.” At the bottom of this mark is a six-pointed star that looks like an asterisk and a Maltese cross.
Between the blade and the grip is an elliptical guard made of German silver. This has tarnished some with age.
The stag horn grips are in nice condition with no cracks or chips and have a very pleasing appearance. The pieces of horn are each anchored by five silver rivets. One side has a long oval plate for etching a name or initials but this is blank.
The brown leather sheath has a German silver throat and tip that matches the guard in color and age. The leather surface of the sheath shows very light wear and small amounts of finish loss. One side has a leather belt loop that shows heavier wear then the rest of the scabbard. It is sewn at bottom but held to the throat by a stud. Some of the thread at bottom of the loop is starting to split from age. The seam running down the body of the sheath is still good and tight.
