This holster features hallmarks of Confederate wartime manufacture, including a press brass button closure, hand stitched seams, hand stitched closure flap, and hand stitched belt loop attachment.
The form of the holster closely matches the profile of a Colt Model 1851 Navy, or perhaps a later Model 1861 Navy revolver in .36 caliber. Typically seen on used holsters, the protrusion of the hammer left its mark on the inside of the flap while the outline of the barrel, loading lever, and cylinder are notable.
The holster measures approximately 13”+ when the flap is closed and fastened and 6.5”+ at its widest when the flap closure is fastened.
Leather has shrunken and cracked, but primarily on the outer finished layer of leather. The leather itself remains soft and supple with no integrity issues.
Overall, a very rare and unique example of a “homespun” or southern arsenal made holster that assuredly saw much service. [cm] [ph:c/L]
