This is a scarce example of a privately purchased belt holster with a military style flap to carry a small .31 caliber percussion revolver, typical of those carried for personal defense by officers who were supposed to focus on governing their men in battle, but might find it necessary or satisfying to fire at an opponent occasionally. This has a simple, straight belt loop sewn to the reverse and would position the pistol on the wearer’s right with the butt to the rear. The flap itself is separately sewn to the inside of the body of the holster and tapers to a point with a slit to fit over a simple flat button sewn to the body of the holster. The seam is good, the belt loop is in place, and the hole on the latch tab has not been torn. There is rubbing to the finish of the flap and exterior body from use, but no holes or tears, and the holster has never been treated with any preservatives or polish. [sr] [ph:m]
