This medium-size cartridge box mimics the shape of the Mann’s patent box, but without all the associated straps. Made to hold unknown cartridges, but very likely for Sharps or some other carbine.
This specimen is constructed of strong, black bridle leather. When closed, the large leather outer flap protects the ammunition within. The single long tin, with four compartments, is present. The strong outer flap has a tooled front edge with two “ears” firmly stitched in place. Leather is excellent. There are two small holes near the right edge of the outer flap. Stitched and riveted to the outer flap is a closure tab that remains unbroken.
Inner implement pouch is sewn to the front of the box. Just above the implement pouch is stamped, “C.S. STORMS / MAKER N.Y.” Bottom of box has a brass finial. There were never any roller buckles. On the box’s back side there are two belt loops stitched and riveted. All stitching is strong and tight.
A nice example of an atypical type of Civil War Federal carbine cartridge box. [jet] [ph:L]
