This is very good example of the New Jersey National Guard variation of the US Model 1872 belt plate on its original belt. The U.S. version was adopted in 1872 and remained regulation until 1902 for use in garrison and dress uniform. Various states followed suit, with O’Donnell and Campbell dating the New Jersey version circa 1885-1905. The pattern follows the US pattern, simply substituting NJ for US in raised letters on at stippled ground in a raised oval border on the plate, which has raised edges. This recessed ground shows some nice gilt, as does the back, with the raised borders and letters showing a natural aged brass patina.

The black leather belt is fully intact, flexible, with the hasp secured by stitching and two rivets on one end with the other having a brass wire hook riveted to it passing through the integral side loop on the plate and running back on itself to adjust using small holes. The leather has good color and surface, showing typical fine crazing to the finish with some rubs, but no major or obtrusive areas of finish loss.  [sr][ph:L]
