CDV is of James G. Bigelow who served in both the 34th and 24th Massachusetts Infantry. Bigelow is posed with one hand resting on the back of a chair with his forage cap resting on the seat. He wears a dark sack coat with rather small corporal’s stripes on each sleeve and light trousers with the thin dark NCO leg stripe. A close look at is forage cap reveals a Company letter “A” and regimental number “24” on top of the crown.
Contrast and clarity are very good. Mount and paper have light surface dirt.
Reverse has imprint for C. E. JONES & VANERSON… RICHMOND, VA. There is also a light period pencil ID “PORTRAIT OF CORPL. BIGELOW, CO. A, 24TH REGT. MASS. VOLS.” Reverse also has a blue 2 cent tax stamp.
James G. Bigelow was born on March 26, 1843. He enlisted as a private in Company E, 34th Massachusetts Infantry on December 7, 1863 and was transferred to Company A, 24th Massachusetts Infantry on June 16, 1865. He was promoted to corporal on July 1, 1865 and to sergeant on January 1, 1866. He was mustered out at Richmond on January 20, 1866. Records show he was present at New Market, Piedmont, Lynchburg, Snicker’s Ford, Winchester, Martinsburg, Hall Town, Berryville, Winchester, Fisher’s Hill, Stickney’s Farm, Ceder Creek, Hatcher’s Run, Fort Gregg and Appomattox.
In addition to this service, Bigelow’s National Archives Pension card shows that he also served in Company A, 19th US Infantry, Battery G, 3rd US Artillery, Company A, 36th US Infantry, and Companies A & G 18th US Infantry but no further details could be found. A news article found in the Concordia Empire for June 27, 1912 only mentions the two Massachusetts regiments. It also says that Bigelow was in eighteen engagements and in one he was severely wounded in the groin by a spent a ball.
Bigelow died on May 2, 1938 and is buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Concordia, Kansas. [AD][PH:L]
