Full title is “Manual of Instruction for the Volunteers and Militia of the United States. Combining as much of the Systems of Cooper, Scott, and Hardee, as is Recognized in the United States Army.” By Major William Gilham and published in 1861.
Textured hardcover with foil imprints on cover and spine. Measures 5” x 8” with 743 pages. Spine shows some wear, pages remain very good with tip-out pages complete and folded in place. Name in ink on front page.
Charles H. Messinger was from Milwaukee, Wisconsin when he enlisted on 9/5/1861 as a Private in Company “D” of the 1st Wisconsin Infantry. He was promoted to 2ns Lt. in October of 1861 and to 1st Lt. in July of 1862. In March 1863 he transferred into the Signal Corps as a 2nd Lt. Charles was promoted to Captain in March 1864 and Mustered Out on 11/25/1865. He died in 1910 and is buried in Lebanon, Ohio. [jet][ph:L]
