This exceedingly rare ID disc belonged to Jas. H. Smythe of Co. H, 2nd (Maryland) E.S. Volunteers - a 9-month regiment. He enlisted on February 19, 1862 in Baltimore, Maryland at age 42. Before the war, he was an innkeeper living in Easton, Maryland. Mustering in on February 20th for 3 years, he would see action at the Battle of Falling Waters and the regiment participated in the battles of Snicker’s Gap, Va and Winchester, VA on July 24, 1864.
Notably, Mr. Smythe was described as 6’, florid complexion, blue eyes, with red hair. In July of 1863 he participated in the Gettysburg Campaign but didn’t see action until Lee’s rearguard action at Falling Waters. In June of 1863, he was fined $1 for drunkenness, in November of 1863 and again in January of 1864, he was listed as the regimental mail carrier.
The disc itself is in great condition with very prominent markings. The reverse features the battle honor of “FALLING WATERS”.
Chances to own an ID disc with battle honors such as this seldom present themselves. [CM][ph:L]

This is a very nice CDV photograph of Charles E. Crow in Confederate uniform. It appears to be a second-generation image; photo of an existing photo. Regardless, the picture is clear with good contrast. Crow wears a Confederate 2nd lieutenant's,… (1138-988). Learn More »
