Over the past year we have offered a number of items that belonged to Major James Mitchell Mutter of the Argyle Artillery. He had a long and glorious service. He eventually moved to Canada and became rather prominent there. Offered here is his ca. 1870 regimental wax seal stamp. It is the official seal for the "ARGYLE & BUTE ARTILLERY, MILITIA". This and a number of intricate motifs are minutely engraved in the brass stamps face. This 1-inch diameter brass fixture is affixed to a heavy 3-1/2 tall turned ebony handle. Included with this is a picture originally taken about 1875, but possibly reproduced about 1900, of Mutter in his full-dress Argle Artillery uniform. Also, there is a document from the Province of British Columbia dated 1907 making him a Notary. [pe] [ph:L]
