This is a hollow, round cannon ball used in outdated 6-pounder cannons left over from the Mexican War. A very few were still in use during the Civil War, mostly by Confederate forces. This is a hollow iron cannon ball with a wood fuse adaptor. A paper time fuse would be inserted into the hole in the adaptor to fire. The iron has dark brown tone and smooth surface.
Occasionally, these lighter cannon balls were used as hand grenades. [jet][ph:L]
