This match safe is made of tin which has been wrapped in celluloid. It features a colorful image of Devil’s Den on one side and General Meade’s Headquarters on the other. Hinged lid lifts to reveal compartment for matches. Measures approx. 1 ½” x 2 ½”.

Maker’s mark which reads, “CRUVER MFG. CO. CHICAGO, U.S.A.”. In the 1900 Census Cruver’s occupation was recorded as running a photo and jewelry company. Examples of his earliest photographic novelties included an enclosed paperweight and a hand mirror and a 1907 advertisement gave a succinct outline of what his business had become. “Advertising novelties and souvenirs of celluloid, glass, paper and metal. Calendars and signs, buttons…and sundries” – most with photos incorporated in the final product. Importantly, a feature of the Cruver photographic novelties was that, for the most part, they were hand colored. By 1914 The Cruver Manufacturing Company had moved from modest premises to a large facility on 2456 West Jackson Boulevard – The Cruver Building.

This is a nice, vintage Gettysburg collectible.  [sm]
