This attractive gun is an antique full-stock percussion long rifle with a Tyler Davidson Lock, made circa the 1840s in Ohio.
The barrel is heavy and octagonal. The bore is .43 caliber and while dull, retains fairly strong rifling. The barrel has moderate pitting around the breach and bolster, but the majority of the barrel surface remains smooth. All furniture is brass, including the nose cap, trigger guard with two finger rests, the side plate, and the butt plate - which have darkened with age. The lockplate is in nice condition with a very clear stamp that reads “T. DAVIDSON & Co. CINCINNATI O”. Decorative engraving is evident across the plate’s face, but exhibits some wear. The front blade sight is present and in good condition, while the horned rear sight has the right “tab” broken off.
This rifle features a full-length maple stock with remnants of old red paint or stain that has given to a light shade where handling has worn it away. The wooden ramrod has been tiger-striped. A couple of the pins securing the barrel to the stock are missing, but the barrel remains anchored by the muzzle pin and the tang screw. A crack is found in the ramrod channel and a hairline crack is also visible on the right side of the stock just below midpoint.
The double set trigger works well as it should, currently set with a very light pull. The hammer does not hold in either half- or full-cock possibly from a worn tumbler. Both the hammer and nipple are in good condition with an imprint where the hammer rests on the nipple.
This early percussion rifle is a handsome piece and would integrate beautifully into any collection. [cm/jet][ph:L]
