An original Springfield Model 1858 Cadet rifle musket in .58 caliber in nice condition. Metal surfaces appear to have been cleaned and are bright.
The 38.00-inch barrel has a surface that wears a pleasing mild sheen with very small amounts of mottling. There is also some scattered pitting near the breech. Bolster area has some light rust as does the nipple. There is no barrel date or proof marks. Musket has the two-leaf flip-up rear sight with the lower leaf frozen to the base. Regular blade front sight is present above the muzzle. Bore is dark and dirty with a ring of crud approx. 4.00 inches down from the muzzle. Rifling is good.
Lock has the Maynard tape primer mechanism with a strong spread-winged eagle stamped on the mechanism door. The action works well; however, the Maynard mechanism is missing the arm that advances the tape primer. Forward of the hammer is a strong “US” over “SPRINGFIELD” with an equally good “1858” stamped behind the hammer. Action works well.
The original black walnut stock is in fair condition. Wood has never been cleaned or sanded and exhibits many light dings and dents along with some numerous old scratches. No cartouche marks are visible. The stock has a closed crack running from the back edge of the lock plate and crosses the wrist at the base of comb and then runs forward to the lower lock screw. The right side of the butt is stamped with “GR NO 31.”
There is a crisp “US” stamped on the butt plate tang. Musket retains its original tulip shaped, straight shanked steel ramrod that has scattered rust over its surface and which is stuck in its channel. Only the sling swivel on the trigger guard is present. The other has broken off of the second barrel band. All barrel bands are original. [ad] [ph:L]
