The Model 1841 Cadet musket was made by the Springfield Armory between 1844-1845 with a total of only 450 produced. These weapons were made in .57 caliber with a 40” round barrel.
Metal surfaces are dark and brown with scattered mottling. Lock has worn spread winged eagle over US forward of the hammer and “SPRING / FIELD / 1844” behind the hammer. A few brighter areas on the lock plate.
Barrel is 40” long with front blade sight mounted on barrel band and no rear sight. Bayonet lug is mounted under the muzzle. The breech is moderately pitted and only portion of the date, “VP” and eagle head remain visible. Bore is clear but needs cleaning.
Action is strong. Original ramrod is present. Lower sling swivel is missing. Butt plate is stamped “US” and has a rack number.
This musket has a walnut stock that is in solid condition overall. There is a small chip missing at the bottom of the butt plate and another missing at the left side of the breech tang. Otherwise, only the usual wear from use and age. Retains good dark color and nice original finish.
A scarce cadet musket for the Corps of Cadets at West Point. [jet] [ph:L]
