Serial number 70464, this Model 1892 Winchester is .38 WCF, was made in 1894, and rates near Fine for overall condition with 80% thin shiny blue on the receiver, stronger on the right, with some thinning on the upper right and on the edges, and vivid color on the loading gate, with some rubbing on the left, showing some silver along the edges and some light scratches. The hammer and lever show light case colors, stronger on the right than the left. The barrel and magazine retain about 95% deep blue. The buckhorn sight is in place and shows thin blue on the top from handling. The forestock cap shows rubbing toward silver. The buttplate shows a caramel tone with underlying muted case.
All parts appear original and correct. The markings are crisp and correct: Barrel: “MANUFACTURED BY THE / WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A.” – Barrel breech: “38 W.C.F.” Receiver tang: “MODEL 1892 / - WINCHESTER - / PAT. OCT. 14. 1884.” Action works well, bore is immaculate.
The wood has a tight fit, good edges, and pleasing, warm brown color. The right butt stock shows some scratches a few shallow pressure dents, with a couple of deeper scratches at the wrist. The left shows one narrow pressure dent at the wrist and some light scratches further back including three darker, but still narrow marks. The forestock shows a tad darker from handling, but has only light handling marks and one shallow divot on the upper right edge next to the rear sight.
This is very nice Model 1892 Winchester with an early production date. [sr] [ph:L]
