.58 caliber. Single-shot muzzleloader. Casehardened lock (& hammer), w/following markings: Eagle motif/ “U.S. Springfield” [forward of hammer], date “1863 [rear of hammer]. Barrel markings: Nipple bolster bearing an eagle motif. Breech marking “VP” (eagle head) and date “1863.”
Two inspector’s cartouches visible on left stock, to rear of second screw. Butt marking: “U.S.” All markings crisp. Strong action, bright bore. All metal parts finished bright, except blued rear sight and barrel bands. All bright metal exhibit light scratching throughout w/ traces of light pitting near muzzle. The stock has been lightly, and professionally retouched. Exhibits a rich brown. Also exhibits a small light, gouge at the butt heel, along with various minor dings consistent with age and usage. Else VG. Highly attractive, lots of character. Great display piece. [jp] [ph:L]
