This revolver, likely due to damage, is made up out of two original revolvers! One of the serial numbers, 66862, on the wedge, barrel, frame, and cylinder, dates half of this revolver to early 1857 and is in the numbered range of the US Navy’s second purchase order for .36 caliber Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolvers. Many of those purchased featured a “USN” stamp on the butt strap, but this specimen had its trigger guard, loading lever, back strap, and grip replaced with parts numbered 105865 which were produced in 1861.

The weapon features an octagonal, 7½” long barrel with loading lever. Barrel retains a strong maker address marking that reads, “ADDRESS SAM’L COLT NEW YORK CITY.” Mechanics are very tight overall, with strong lockup at half cock and full – a true testament to Colt’s legendary quality.  The grips are in good condition with typical wear and minor dings. No inspectors’ cartouches remain.  A good amount of the naval scene remains visible on the cylinder amid dark spotting. “COLTS / PATENT / U.S.” is stamped on the right side of the frame.

Gun metal shows use and wear. Some dings on barrel edges and gray/brown tone overall. Brass is clean with mellow tone.

This pistol will appeal to a broad range of collectors and enthusiasts from the antebellum era to the Civil War and westward expansion.  [jet][ph:L]
