Lots of original blue and some case colors with immaculate checkered hard rubber grips with the rampant colt at top on either side, about excellent condition. Long barrel version with ejector. Barrel is 5 3/8 inches long with “COLT D.A. 38” on the left near the frame and correct two-line barrel address, “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFGT. Co. / HARTFORD.CT. U.S.A. on the top. The left frame bears the correct three-line patent stamp, “PAT. SEPT 19. 1871. / “ “ 5.”79 / “ JAN.19.”75” with the rampant colt logo in a circle just to its rear.  Slight spotting on hammer and cylinder grooves. Patents a tad light on upper right and colt on lower left. Other markings sharp. Production ran to almost 167,000. All matching serial number serial number 164650, dating this to 1908.  Action functions well.

The Model 1877 was produced from 1877 to 1909 and was Colt’s first double-action revolver. The nickname “Lightning” needs no explanation. They were popular pistols even if the double action mechanism was more likely to get out of order than the single action. Billy the Kid was carrying one when he was killed by Pat Garrett. This is a top-shelf example. [sr] [ph:m]
