This cavalry carbine cleaning brush device is an excellent example of a tool used to clean out the barrel bore of breechloading carbines during the war. Carried by most Federal cavalrymen, the item consists of a 4” long, cylindrical brush connected to a brass ferrule that secures to a 25” long leather tong.

Brush has stiff circular bristles that would scour the bore when the leather tong was dropped down the breech and then pulled outward from the muzzle.

This cleaning brush is a very fine piece of Union cavalry equipment. [jet][ph:L]
