This is a Thuer’s Patent metallic centerfire cartridge. This short .36 caliber cartridge is in excellent original condition and was for the Colt Thuer conversion “Pocket Navy” revolver. These were designed under Patent No. 82,258 dated September 15, 1868.
The Thuer casing is made of two parts, a tapered brass cylindrical body and an internal brass primer assembly at the base. A small percussion cap fit on an anvil in the primer assembly. A set of small grooves were cut on the inside of the case mouth to hold a lead bullet in place once it was seated.
This cartridge was placed in the revolver’s cylinder just like a combustible paper cartridge using an altered percussion loading lever device. Colt had intended these for their “New Patent Metallic Central Fire Cartridge Revolvers.”
Unfortunately for Colt, this conversion system was not well received; which makes for a rare cartridge. [jet] [ph:jet]
