Scarce .36 caliber Savage cartridge for Navy revolvers.
Here is a cartridge that is rarely offered for sale in this fine condition. This style of cartridge was made by D.C. Sage of Middletown, CT. using Julius Hotchkiss’ patent of February 11, 1862. The manufacturing process was to use mutton’s intestine to form a waterproof “seamless skin” cartridge case. The case was filled with powder and tied to the lead bullet with thread.
Savage revolver cartridges were constructed with “skin” cases by D.C. Sage & Company and with paper cases by Robert Chadwick. Currently, collectors find the paper cartridges more often and in far better condition than their “skin” counterpart. The fact that this specimen is in such fine condition is a rarity in itself. Powder is exposed on the bottom, but cartridge remains strong and solid.
