Jackson’s note to Johnston was written a week after his tactical defeat by Union forces at Kernstown, VA, March 23, 1862. This tactical defeat, however, was in fact a strategic victory inasmuch as it prompted President Lincoln to divert forces intended for McClellan in order to confront and bottle up Jackson. At precisely this point, at the date of this letter, Jackson was at Rude’s Hill, VA, reorganizing his forces and ordering engineer Jed Hotchkiss to “make me a map of the Valley.”  Soon after he would make fools of federal generals Banks and Fremont in his famous Valley Campaign. In this letter to senior commander Joe Johnston he advises of Banks approach. Text:

My dear General….All is quiet in front, but it is believed that Banks will advance on me so soon as his supplies have arrive / Very truly yours T.J. Jackson / General J. E. Johnston.

A remarkable note from “Stonewall” Jackson to Joe Johnston the outset of the 1862 Valley Campaign that would consolidate Jackson fame and reputation. For Jackson aficionados, a stunning collectible.

Ex – Texas Civil War Museum collection. [JP][ph:L]
