Offered is a 98AZ-service rifle manufactured by Konigliche Gewehrfabrik Erfurt, Erfurt. Principle markings are “crown over ‘Erfurt” (manufacturer’s code), “1917” (date of manufacture), “64x” (serial number) and “Kar 98” (Model 1898 carbine). It is also marked with a crown over gothic letter (military acceptance stamp) and eagle (military property mark). The rifle is very good condition, fully functional and all matching numbers except for the bolt. The 7.92 mm bolt action Karabiner 98K was the standard German service rifle and issued in large numbers 1n 1917 and 1918.
Neatly carved on the left side of the stock is ‘Captured from a German by Sargt. O. P. McKay. In the World’s War in France.” The stock has a “duffel cut” performed by the soldier to fit the disassembled rifle in his duffel bag for the trip home.
