For details on US Army, Navy and Airforce machetes see Cole, US Military Knives, Book III. These were survival and landing force weapons and came in a variety of blade lengths, markings, finish, handle material, etc. This one is clearly marked “DISSTON / U.S./ 1945” on the reverse of the blade near the handle, and “B.M. Co. 3 vp (with stars)/ 1945” on the back of the steel throat just under the belt hook, and “US” on the front (See Cole, p.152 for the machete and p.153 for the scabbard.) Cole notes the 18” blade variety like this was packed in the “Global Survival Kit ‘A-26’” and “was also used in kits of many of the airborne troops of W.W. II.”
These had rough finish black blades. Cole’s illustrated example has a black plastic handle. This one is brown. The edge, finish, and markings of the machete and color, surface, and markings of the scabbard are both about excellent, showing just light wear and scratches. The machete itself still retains its wrist loop. [sr][ph:L]
