Horizon blue uniform items went into production in August 1914 but did not become universally issued until 1915, although components of the earlier uniforms were often mixed with the horizon blue before that date. The "fatigue kepi" offered was certainly made late in the war because it is cheaply done and would be called "Ersatz" quality with a black painted canvas over cardboard peak and a sweat band that is painted canvas then shellacked. It is made the way, and using materials, similar to late Civil War Confederate Depot caps! It is fully lined with a fine yellow cotton. The ersatz non-functional, not leather, chin strap is made from the same wool as the cap itself it is held in place by 2 artillery enlisted man buttons that have never been off this cap. The cap is 3 1/2 inches high and the top is 8 inches in diameter. There are 7 or 8 minor moth nips. Size is about 6 1/2. The rarity of this item, although millions were produced, cannot be overstated! These when they do appear can be found for sale well over $1000 in far poorer condition. A must for a French World War 1 uniform collector and museum worthy.  [sr] [ph:L]
