Exceptional and uncommon Luftwaffe Model 1935 helmet made with only a single eagle decal and no national shield. The lack of a national shield (and it never had one) dates the helmet to mid-1940; the national tri-color shield was ordered removed in March 1940 and the simplified Model 1940 helmet design entered production in August 1940.
The helmet is marked “NS66” denoting the maker Vereinigte Deutsch Nickelwerke AG of Schwerte and shell size of 66. The helmet is also marked “DN5” for the lot number. Both stamps are deeply applied and easy to read. There is also a visible ink stamp in the shell dome, but it is illegible.
The liner shows some slight wear, but is completely intact, not discolored, and still has its original draw string. The chin strap is absent. The helmet shell retains 98 percent of its original paint and only exhibits a few slight handling marks and a small ding at the left rear. Overall, this helmet is in exceptional condition.
The helmet paint is smooth as it should be for Model 1935 production, indicating it has NOT been reworked and remains in its original configuration. Subsequent Model 1940 production and German reworks switched to the use of a rougher texture paint. Moreover, maker NS used darker paint hues than the other manufacturers, a trait visible on this helmet and also verifying the presence of the original paint. The eagle decal is 100 percent intact.
A similar Model 1935 helmet made by NS with only a single decal is pictured in Ken Niewiarowicz’s reference book, Germany’s Combat Helmets 1933 – 1945: A Modern Study on pages 74-75. This a hard-to-find example in collector grade condition! It will be tough to find a nicer Model 1935 Luftwaffe helmet! [SK] [ph:L]
