Model 1910 US mess kit with lid and folding handle.
The lid has been inscribed with an arrow pierced heart above the initials “F.T.W.” The artwork is surrounded by a thin double border.
Inside the kit is a spoon marked “US” and “1917” with a maker’s mark of “WF” over “W.” There is also a “U.S.” marked fork that dates from World War Two.
The lid is a tight fit but will seat as will the handle. The lid is missing its “O” ring.
The tip of the handle is marked “U.S.” and “191?” The last number looks like a “7” but there is a rust spot covering the number. An “R” is also visible and is probably part of the arsenal mark “R.I.A.” for Rock Island Arsenal.
There are two serial numbers stamped on the lid. One is 30236 which matches a soldier named Emanuel L. Reed of Scranton, Pennsylvania.
Reed was born in Chicago, Illinois but was living in Scranton when he entered the Army on November 1, 1917. He was originally assigned to Battery F, 311th Field Artillery, 79th Division. Then, on November 23, 1917, he was released from the battery and on the following December 10 he was assigned to the 125th Aero Squadron whose designation was changed to the 644th Aero Squadron after arriving in France in January 1918.
While overseas the 644th served as a supply squadron at Issoudun Airdrome as part of the 3rd Air Instructional Center.
Reed sailed for home on May 13, 1919 and was discharged the following June 6. He died in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on May 13, 1962 and is buried in the Dalton Jewish Cemetery, Dalton, Pa. [ad] [ph:L]
