Cornelius Murphy enlisted as a private in Company I, 4th Rhode Island Infantry on October 30, 1861. Records show he mustered out at Providence on October 15, 1864 however, the book “RHODE ISLAND’S CIVIL WAR DEAD: A COMPLETE ROSTER” by Robert Grandchamp says on page 59 that Murphy died of dysentery at Providence on September 23, 1864 and was buried there in the North Burial Ground.

The 4th Rhode Island was organized on October 1, 1861. During its service they were part of the 9th, 7th, 18th and 22nd Corps. The regiment saw action at Elizabeth City and were heavily engaged at New Bern and Antietam. They also served at Fredericksburg, Weldon Railroad and lost heavily in the battle of the Crater.

The 4th was mustered out on October 15, 1864 having lost 5 officers and 135 enlisted men killed, died of wounds and disease plus many others wounded and survived. [ad] [ph:L]
