Lice or ‘graybellies,’ ‘rebels,’ or ‘bluebellies’ as some soldiers would affectionately call the vermin, was an unfortunate common occurrence for the Civil War soldier. The item here was one implement that was used to get rid of the lice. Due to the overwhelming presence of lice amongst soldiers, they had numerous ways of expelling the bugs, one of these was the equivalent to a fine-tooth comb. This comb is made of ivory and has hand carved teeth to help extract the lice from garments, beards, and the like. It measures 2 5/8” x 1 ½”. All teeth are present with minor spacing from wear and age. Very good condition lice comb. [mc] [ph:L]
