This is the left side of a Panzer III (WW2 German Tank) commander’s hatch. The Panzer III (and early IV) commander’s hatches were circular and split at the center making two halves. These hatches differed from those found on the Panthers and Tiger tanks which were one piece.
This hatch panel was obtained a couple of years ago from a seller in Russia and used as a pedestal for a model of the Panzer III. No history on the tank or where it was taken from. This panel has been stripped of its hinges and the soft crash cushion. Its surface has some minor pitting but it is straight and solid. It has been primed and repainted.
The Panzer III was developed in the 1930’s as the German Army’s main battle tank. It had a crew of 5 and served in Poland, Battle of France and the early Russian campaign. Because of its small 5cm gun and thin armor, it was no match against the newly introduced Russian T34 tank. Manufacture of the Panzer III was stopped and remaining tanks were taken off front line service. The Panzer III chassis and engine continued to be used in the production of STUG III assault guns and on other self-propelled weapons.
This hatch would make a nice display with a Panzer crew uniform, or a pedestal for a tank model or for restoration. [am/ad] [ph:L]
