This is the Western V44 with the iron guard and handle rivets. It is WW2 era. It was the fighting knife of the U.S. Army Air Corps fame. Western made many WW2 knives and stands out as the manufacturer that made the most variations.
Knife has a clipped point single-edged blade which is free of nicks. Maker marked “WESTERN” on the ricasso. Measures 14 ½” total length. Blade measures 9 ¼”. Blade has light spots and mottling near the point. Guard has a small amount of surface rust. Coated wooden grip is held together with three rivets.
Sheath is brown leather with white stitching. It is in excellent condition with no crazing and all stitching is tight. Seven rivets also fasten the sheath together. Belt loop is attached to sheath with two rivets. Strap with snap goes around grip to secure knife in the sheath.
This is an outstanding, collectable and usable knife. [sm]
