This British-made accoutrement is an original saber bayonet made for the two-band Enfield .577 caliber musket longarm. Bayonet, with its Yataghan-style blade measures a total of 28” long and has a 22¾” long steel blade with a single 15½”long fuller on each flat. Blade appears to have been sharpened and cleaned at one time. Wears a semi-bright, light gray finish with scattered speckles of light peppery pitting overall. Blade edge shows visible serrations from sharpening. Blade has just two markings on the ricassos (a Knights Head on the obverse and a small crown over 20) on the reverse. Grips are checkered black leather in worn but good, tight condition with no cracks or chips. Reverse side of the cross guard is stamped “193” with opposite side blank. The black, flat-bodied leather scabbard is mounted with original iron throat clasp, frog button and tip. Leather is in very good condition with no flaking or crazing. Does show few light spots of scuffing and both iron tip and throat are loose to the body. Stitching is excellent and not frayed or open. Scabbard shows no weak areas. A very nice 1856 pattern Enfield saber bayonet specimen with its original leather scabbard.
