Hardcover book with silver lettering on the front that reads “THE BATTLE IN THE WEST.” Lightly handwritten in ink across the top is “Liberated from Waldenhausen Germany October 1944.” The front and back covers are very thick. Inside the front cover is a cut out that holds a small stereo viewer that unfolds and is adjustable. The manipulating arms are missing one of the pins but the viewer still works fine. In another pocket above the viewer are 25 small stereo cards showing German soldiers in action. It shows soldiers firing and loading machineguns, mortars and a small anti-tank gun. It also shows them crossing a river, jumping over trenches and wearing some camo uniforms. There is even a close up shot of the back of a soldier who is carrying homing pigeons in a cage on his back.
Inside the back cover are 3 more cutouts that hold another 75 views. The first group of 25 views shows artillerymen working different kinds and sizes of guns. In this group are also a few shots of tanks and their crews. Some of the tankers are wearing black panzer berets. The next group of 25 views shows mostly engineers building roads and pontoon bridges. This group also contains some images relating to the German Air Force, Navy activities, field mess and French Prisoners. The last batch of 25 views show some higher German officers, battle damaged towns in France, captured equipment, destroyed bridges and the forest in France where the Armistice was signed ending World War One.
All the stereo cards are in good condition and have captions on the back in German. The cards meas. approx. 5.00 inches long by 2.25 wide. All are numbered. All are present. The photos are bright, clean and clear. In between the covers are 75 pages of text (all in German of course) and 8 tipped in color prints. The color prints show soldiers, tanks, machineguns etc. The covers are a little dirty from age and storage. Also the page edges have browned some but overall this item is in very nice condition.
