Durkopp seems to have gotten out of making bayonets around 1940. This one is clearly marked Durkopp on one side of the blade and numbered 7331 with an “i” underneath it, the batch or block letter designation with numbers within each block running up to four digits. The pommel bears two small eagle/numerical stamps on the reverse above the spring. The blade has a good edge and point with thin blue mixing with thin brown. The grips are good. The guard and pommel show gray mixed with brown. The scabbard shows some thin blue, but mostly gray with areas of thin, brown rust. The frog hook is in place. The scabbard is numbered “1686/a” above the hook. The other side is marked “S/239 / 1936,” indicating manufacture in 1936, but the maker code points to Herder as the maker. Despite the scabbard switch it is still a good, early WW2 representative K98 bayonet and scabbard. [sr] [ph:L]
