This is a good example of the bayonet and scabbard for the French1886 Lebel Rifle, France’s basic infantry rifle through World War One, 8mm (which led the way for small bore infantry rifles,) bolt action with a magazine capacity of eight rounds, plus two more in the elevator and chamber if you were feeling anxious. The bayonet blade is cruciform in cross section and clearly meant for thrusting. The rifle underwent some modifications in 1893, but remained the standard, and by many the preferred, infantry rifle through the end of the war and showed up also in World War Two, usually in the shortened carbine version. This is one of the altered, shortened bayonets, the alteration dating about 1935 by most estimates, with the bottom quillon hook, useful in bayonet fighting, removed and both the blade and scabbard shortened, but retaining its early style brass grip. The blade and guard show remnants of a dark blue finish. The brass has a good, aged patina. The scabbard is good, undented, and showing just minor handling marks and most of it finish.  [sr] [ph:L]
