Offered here is a German steel helmet repurposed as a child’s potty chair. We call this an “Anti-Axis” piece as opposed to “Trench Art.” This is because it was likely made and used in the United States during the War as an anti-German propaganda item instead of being assembled after the War as a souvenir for the troops.
An inverted Model 1935 German helmet is the bowl, three 1942-dated .50 caliber shell casings are mounted to the bottom as legs, a plain wood “toilet seat” is screwed in place with a hinged lid attached to that. The outside of the helmet is painted a very light green with black “SS” insignia on one side and a Swastika on the other. The interior is painted tan with a caricature of Adolph Hitler in the bottom of the bowl! The lid is painted red with a German Cross on the underside. Painted on the top of the lid is another caricature, but due to the crackling of the old paint we’re not sure what it represents. It appears as a squid with three tentacles (middle one holding a rifle) wearing a helmet and surrounded by a ship’s steering wheel.
The whole piece remains in solid condition. There are some minor “rubs” and scratches to the paint on the steel helmet. There is also minor crackling on painted wood surfaces and some scattered light surface grime. The vents in the M35 helmet have been plugged and the liner rivets removed. Overall, whole structure is sturdy, paint color is bright, and caricatures fascinating.
A great piece of World War 2 “Anti-Axis” craftmanship and creativity! [jet] [ph:L]
