This is a good example of the German 1915 pattern Erkennungsmarke or dog tag that improved upon earlier patterns by allowing more room for the soldier’s information. This one-piece tag, however, still created problems for subsequent identification if it was removed from a soldier’s body on the battlefield. This was remedied by the 1916 pattern, which stamped the soldier’s information twice, separated by a scored line permitting one part to be broken off, and the other to remain on the soldier. This one belonged to Adloph Bluehardt, born in 1896, and from the town of Lissen in the Prussian district of Kreis Angerburg, since 1945 a part of Poland. The tag is in good condition, with smooth metal, largely olive green with some thin white and gray stains on the lower face, and somewhat larger ones on reverse, but very displayable with sharp markings that include his reception company and final assignment.
