Coat is circa 1942 and is a size 46.
The exterior is made of black oilskin that is in excellent condition for its age. The collar is lined with brown mohair while the oilskin body has 2 diagonal slit pockets on the chest. Pocket openings are outlined in brown leather. Top of the skirt also has a horizontal pocket on each side protected by an oilskin flap. Front is double-breasted with six heavy plastic buttons arranged in two rows of three. All seams are tight and oilskin shows very little surface wear. There are no rips or tears.
Interior body has a heavy sheepskin lining over the oilskin. Sleeves are lined with a heavy gray blanket like material with knit cuffs. Bottom center of the skirt has a printed label that reads “NAVY DEPARTMENT – CONTRACT NXs 9628 – SIZE 46.”
Documentation with the coat states that this coat “was awarded to Mario G. Mirabelli of Neptune, N.J.”
With the coat are copies of photographs found on the internet showing this type of coat being worn by Navy personnel during the Normandy invasion. [ad] [ph:L]
