The Russian Front Medal was authorized on May 26, 1942 to commemorate the German’s first winter campaign in Russia. The award was given to all Wehrmacht personnel, civilians and foreign volunteers who spent at least fourteen days in combat on the Russian front between November 15, 1941 and April 15, 1942.
Medal is of alloy with a silver washed outer edge including the German helmet at top of the circular drop. The center of the drop is blued.
The obverse of the medal has a recessed center with an embossed helmet and grenade at top center. The face of the obverse has a high relief national eagle with down-swept wings clutching a swastika which is superimposed over a sprig of laurel.
The reverse has a smooth background with a Latin inscription at center that reads "Winterschlacht Im Osten 1941/42", (Winter Battle in the East 1941/42) in raised lettering. Below the lettering is a crossed sword and laurel branch. The suspension ring is present at top.
Medal comes with the original ribbon that is in very nice condition and is complete with its original issue envelope with black lettering that reads "Medaille Winterschlacht Im Osten 1941/42 (Ostmedaille)".
