The N.S.F.K. (National Socialist Flying Corps) was created in January of 1932, to promote interest in aviation throughout Germany. It was very closely associated with the Hitler Youth organization. Events by the NSFK involved model building with flying competitions of the completed projects, educational classes related to aeronautics followed by building and flying actual glider aircraft. Glider flying was the mainstay activity of the NSFK, although ballooning and balloon competitions were also held by them. As with most Nazi organizations, sporting events of all kinds were popular and encouraged within the ranks of the NSFK. Essentially, the organization was divided into three sections - powered flight, gliders and ballooning. The NSFK also operated a ski school at Zell-am-See in Austria.
This table medal was given to a participant in the 1937 Coastal Flight or KUSTENFLUG. It meas. approx. 3.75 x 3.25 inches. The design of the medal features a naked winged male figure standing on a swastika. The man’s wings are outstretched. A copper bar marked “KUSTENFLUG” is stretched across the man’s lower body. His ankles are flanked b y the year “19-37” while the swastika is flanked by “NS-FK.” The whole design is superimposed over a diamond shaped background.
Reverse has text in German “ Mit unserem Führer im gleichen schritt und tritt fliegen wir fur unser ewiges Deutschland” which in English reads “With our guide at the same step we fly for our eternal Germany.” Beneath the wording is a facsimile signature of the NSFK Korpsfuhrer Friedrich Christiansen.
