This is a group of 7 documents and 2 photographs relating to the service of Bernard J. Dwyer of Auburn, New York in World War One.

Dwyer was born in Auburn on September 3, 1891. At age 18 he enlisted in the US Army at Fort Slocum, New York on December 13, 1909. He was assigned to the Coast Artillery Corps and served 2 four-year enlistments. During his service he was promoted to corporal in March of 1915 but was reduced to private at some undisclosed date only to be promoted to corporal again in April of 1917. By the end of his second enlistment in 1917 he was serving as a sergeant in Battery F, 3rd US Field Artillery. Records are not clear but Dwyer seems to be discharged from the army in late1917 and registers for the draft. Then, in September of 1918, he is drafted and sent to Camp Taylor in Louisville, Kentucky where he is assigned at his old rank of sergeant to Replacement Draft, Battery #11 but is reduced to private again. He sails for France aboard the LAPLAND on October 26, 1918. Once in France, he rejoins his old Battery F as a replacement. He remains with Battery F, 3rd US Field Artillery, 6th Infantry Division for the rest of his time in the army. While in France he regains the rank of corporal on March 1, 1919.  He then sails back to the US aboard the KAISERIN AUGUSTE VICTORIA on June 10, 1919 and is discharged shortly afterward. Not much is known about Mr. Dwyer’s post-war life other than that he worked as a clerk in Syracuse. He does end up in a National Soldiers Home in Bath, New York in 1931 suffering from severe bronchitis but is released to his brother’s care and lives with him in Waverly, New York. He dies there in September of 1953 and is buried in St. James Cemetery. He never married.

The documents in the group consist of the following

Promotion warrant to corporal in Battery F, 3rd US Artillery dated March 16, 1915 FT. SAM HUSTON, TX.

Promotion warrant to corporal in Battery F, 3rd US Artillery dated April 23, 1917 FT. SAM HUSTON, TX.

Promotion to sergeant in Battery F, 3rd US Artillery dated June 21, 1917 IRON SPRINGS, TX.

War Department Provost Marshall Washington, D.C. Form 2007 assigning Dwyer to Camp Taylor dated September 12, 1918

Draft Notice dated September 17, 1918 Washington D.C.

Serviceman’s Group Life Insurance document dated October 1, 1918 Washington D.C.

Promotion warrant to corporal in Battery F, 3rd US Field Artillery dated March 1, 1919 AEF FRANCE.

All promotion warrants are in good used condition with an eagle masthead and are filled out in legible period ink and signed by the appropriate officers. The servicemen’s life insurance document is heavily affected by silverfish nips. The two draft documents have the usual fold lines and some light surface dirt and minor edge wear.

The two photos in the group are both believed to be of Dwyer. The first is a photo postcard of him in uniform wearing an early enlisted man’s visor cap, shirt, suspenders and army trousers. He is posed in front of a building and stands with his hands in his pockets. Reverse of the post card is blank.

The second is a larger photo, approx. 5 x 7 and mounted on an 8 x 10 mount. The image shows Dwyer in the full uniform of a 2nd lieutenant standing by his saddled horse in a field by a barracks. Apparently at some point after his return to the United States he received a commission but there is no document in the group to back up that assumption, only the photographic evidence. The reverse of the photo is blank.

This is a nice collection of documents to a fellow who had his ups and downs during his military career. Perhaps getting records from the government might uncover and amusing story.   [ad] [ph:L]
