The “Wehrpass” or “SERVICE RECORD” book meas. approx. 4.25 x 5.75 inches and runs 52 pages. These were kept by a headquarters unit and were not carried by the soldier personally. Many pages are filled in and stamped. Cardboard cover is grayish-green and has an eagle and swastika over the word “WEHRPASS.” Also stamped on the cover of this particular book is “KRIEGSMARINE.” The book comes with a photograph of the subject person attached to the inside front cover.
This book is for Otto Holsten from Stade who was born February 25, 1895. The record book tells us that during World War One Holsten served in the Naval Pioneer Regiment 20 from June 14, 1915 to December 14, 1918. After being called back he served in the 10th Ship Cadre Battalion and the 6th Navy Motor Transport Battalion in 1940, then with the 12th Navy Motor Transport Battalion from 1940-1942 and the 4th Navy Motor Transport Battalion from 1942-1943. During that time he spent 292 days at sea.
Holsten was awarded the Hindenberg Honor Cross for Combatants in World War One and the High Seas Fleet Badge on November 23, 1943.
