This Nazi party flag is made of a red cotton material with a printed white circle and black swastika on both sides. The hoist edge is bound in white canvas with rope loops at each end. The white border is marked on one side with “GOSCH. 80 x 135” and a maker’s name. The flag meas. approx. 28.00 inches on the hoist and 52.50 inches on the fly. Overall the flag is in good condition with very little dirt and no visible moth damage. There is a light dirt stain that meas. approx. 5.50 x 3.50 inches. This is a subdued stain that is light in color. It is located just to the right of the central device on one side only.
The white central device on both sides bears the signatures of some US veterans. There are 18 in all. These signatures were done during the war and are not recent. There is no unit mentioned and some internet research reveals that two of the veterans were in the 385th Infantry of the 76th Division (Lien & Towse,) one was in the Pacific with the 32nd Division while another from an obituary is also known to have served in the Pacific (Tackette.) One veteran, Robert Ortwein was a POW who served with the 35th Division in Europe.
As seen from the small amount of research done none of these men shared the same unit or same hometown and some were in a totally different theater of war from the others. It seems likely that this flag was signed by veterans at a demobilization center while awaiting discharge since that is when men from all theaters gathered in one place for processing out of the Army.
