This badge has an open pinback bar at top formed like the embroidered border of a shoulder strap from which a two-color woven silk ribbon suspends a round celluloid disk with a shield at center quartered with the arms of Maryland and the Confederate battleflag, surrounded on the sides by a wreath with berries, at top a gray slouch hat with yellow cord over a sheathed sword and sword belt, all lettered around the wreath, “FRANKLIN BUCHANAN CAMP No. 747. U.C.V. BALTO. MD. The ribbon is stamped in black ink on the reverse of the red portion “TORSCH & LEE / Baltimore, MD. / Pat. Jan, 30, 94.”
Torsch and Lee are picked up in the 1893-94 Baltimore city directory as selling badges, and likely other society goods, at 25 W. Baltimore St. Franklin Buchanan was a Baltimore native and the only full admiral in the CS Navy. Born in 1800, he became a midshipman in the US Navy in 1815, lieutenant 1825, commander 1841, and captain 1855, commanding ships on wide ranging sea duty, including Perry’s visit to Japan. He was first superintendent of Annapolis, served in the Mexican War, and commandant of the Washington Navy Yard at the beginning of the war. He joined the Confederate Navy in September 1861, commanded the James River Squadron in 1862, and was wounded while commanding the ironclad CSS Virginia at Hampton Roads. He commanded CS navy forces at Mobile Bay, where he was again wounded and was captured aboard the ironclad CSS Tennessee. He was exchanged in February 1865 and later returned to Maryland, dying there in 1874.
The badge is in very good condition, with slight soiling to the ribbon and some fading to the printed reds of the badge. The ribbon has an orange color on one half and bluish-back on the other. We expect these have slightly shifted from gold and black, the Maryland state colors. [sr][ph:m]
