The 17th National Reunion of Confederate Veterans was held in Richmond, VA in 1907. This item is a section of the reunion badge worn by veterans in attendance. The festivities began May 30, with a dedication of the equestrian monument of JEB Stuart, followed by a series of parades, and then the final day, June 3, concluded with the unveiling of the Jefferson Davis monument.
In the shape of the maltese cross, the badge is bronze gilt with signs of darkening/discoloration on the cross points. Each point contains a word, starting from top, “1907/ JUNE 3/ RICHMOND, VA/ MAY 30.” The center is an enameled red and blue Confederate flag. There is paint chipping in the lower right quadrant of the flag. The words “UNITED CONFEDERATE VETERANS REUNION” circle the flag.
On reverse is stamped “SCHWAAB S&S/ MILWAUKEE.” The Scwaab company was founded by Andrew Schwaab in 1881. They were known for engraving unique badges for various companies and organizations.
Nice piece for those looking for UCV badges and items. [mk] [ph:L]
